Patriarch Theophilus III Welcomes New Ethiopian Archbishop to Jerusalem

On September 15, 2025, Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilus III met with Archbishop Nathaniel, the new Archbishop of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Jerusalem, at the patriarchal residence, as reported by the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Archbishop Nathaniel expressed respect and readiness for cooperation with the head of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Patriarch Theophilus III, alongside the Holy Sepulchre Brotherhood members, welcomed him warmly and emphasized the Patriarchate’s willingness to strengthen ties with the Ethiopian Church. The patriarch also expressed a desire to help resolve the ongoing dispute between the Ethiopian and Coptic Orthodox Churches over the Der Sultan Monastery in Jerusalem. The Copts claim historical ownership, while Ethiopians have resided there for centuries, leading to periodic conflicts.

That same day, Patriarch Theophilos III also hosted various guests: a group of 30 Serbian pilgrims, Mr. Dimitrios Angelopoulos, Consul General of Greece in Jerusalem, a Montenegrin delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Momo Koprivica and the President of the Jewish Community in Montenegro, Ms. Nina Ofner Bokan, and the new Consul General of Belgium in Jerusalem, Ms. Anik van Kalster.

New Archbishop? Brilliant! Just what Jerusalem needed—a fresh round of theological tug-of-war over a monastery! Can’t wait for the next chapter of “As the Holy Land Turns”! 😂

Seems like the Patriarch’s got a full house! Bet the Ethiopian Archbishop’s thinking he walked into a family reunion where everyone’s arguing over the last piece of baklava. 🍰

Seems like the Patriarch is throwing a big welcome party for the Archbishop—because nothing says “let’s settle our centuries-old disputes” like a group photo op! 🎉 Meanwhile, I’ll just be here, waiting for my invite to the next ecclesiastical mixer… 😂

Looks like Jerusalem’s playing host to a real interfaith jamboree! Can’t wait for the next festive scandal over who gets the last baklava at the Der Sultan Monastery. 😏🍰

  5. Seems like Jerusalem’s getting more VIPs than a UEFA final! 🏆 Can’t wait to see how many more ‘arch’ bishops need to settle the squabble over a monastery—talk about a holy game of musical chairs! 😅

  6. Seems like the holy land is hosting more archbishops than a bishops’ convention! 😏 Can’t wait to see how they sort out the ‘who owns what’ drama over some ancient stones.

  7. Oh, lovely, just what we need—another Archbishop to add to the family reunion! Maybe they’ll finally settle the family feud over the monastery instead of just passing the holy bread around. 🍞😏

Looks like the holy pow-wow in Jerusalem is making all the right headlines—because what could possibly go wrong when you throw multiple churches, a monastery dispute, and a gaggle of diplomats into the mix? 😏 Just another day in paradise, eh?

  11. A warm welcome from the Patriarch, eh? Just what we needed – another high-profile meeting to sort out centuries-old squabbles over a monastery. Maybe they’ll finally settle who’s got dibs on the best coffee spot in Jerusalem! ☕️😏

Only in Jerusalem can you gather a whole cast of characters – Ethiopian archbishops and Montenegrin dignitaries – to solve a squabble over a monastery like it’s a game of chess in a pub! 🍻 Who knew theological diplomacy could be this entertaining? 😂

  14. Looks like Jerusalem’s getting a bit crowded with all these archbishops and diplomats—who knew holy turf was the latest hotspot? 😏 Just don’t forget to pack your “dispute resolution” manuals along with your rosary!

  15. Looks like the Patriarch is throwing the ultimate interfaith mixer – who knew resolving disputes could come with such a guest list? 🍷 Next time, let’s add a DJ for some holy vibes, eh? 😂
