Brussels (dpa) – In light of the initial setback of the US peace initiative for Ukraine, the EU Commission is advocating for significant sanctions against Russia. Under pressure from Washington, the Brussels body aims to advance the complete ban on liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from Russia to the EU. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that this ban is anticipated to take effect as soon as early 2027, a year earlier than previously scheduled.
Von der Leyen noted that Russia funds its war in Ukraine through fossil fuel sales revenues, emphasizing the urgency of cutting off this financial support.
Russian gas remains in circulation within the EU
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU has implemented significant import bans on Russian energy sources, including coal and oil. However, gas sanctions have not yet been enacted due to ongoing dependencies.
The new sanctions proposal also encompasses additional punitive measures in financial and trade sectors, according to von der Leyen. EU member state representatives will discuss these proposals in the upcoming days. (September 19)
