Ljubljana – During her visit to Slovenia, European Commissioner for the Environment, Water Resilience, and Competitive Circular Economy Jessika Roswall emphasized the necessity of collaboration in developing flood safety measures, advocating for solutions that prioritize nature-based approaches.
“Collaboration is crucial during these challenging times,” Roswall stated in a press release, highlighting the need to focus on safety while maintaining competitiveness. “The interplay between environmental concerns and climate action is essential for competitiveness,” she noted.
Roswall acknowledged Slovenia’s efforts in these areas, underlining the significance of recovery efforts following the severe floods in August 2023. She warned that droughts and floods are likely to persist, reiterating the need for nature-based solutions.
During her visit, she observed initiatives aimed at enhancing flood resilience along the Gradaščica River and has plans to visit a meadow in the Ljubljana Marshes, as well as a Gorenjska farm that exemplifies sustainable practices in protected regions.
Prior to her field tour, Roswall met with Slovenian Minister for the Environment, Climate, and Energy Bojan Kumr. Their discussions, as reported by the ministry, centered on the European Commission’s current environmental priorities, including the transition to a circular economy, improvements in air quality, funding for environmental initiatives, and EU priorities in multilateral negotiations.
