The European Union Delegation in Tirana will closely monitor the selection process for the new head of the special structure against organized crime and corruption.
EU Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, met with the Chairwoman of the High Council of the Prosecution, Mirela Bogdani, emphasizing that the EU delegation will continue to support the entire judicial system in enhancing independence, accountability, and efficiency at all levels.
The High Council of the Prosecution is a newly established body for judicial governance, a result of the Justice Reform.
“A reliable and independent justice system is vital for strengthening citizens’ trust and advancing Albania’s European Union aspirations,” Gonzato remarked.
During the meeting, Gonzato reviewed future initiatives and significant upcoming events, including the selection and appointment of the new head of SPAK.
He reiterated that the EU delegation will closely follow this process and maintain its support for the justice system.
The HCP plays a key role in ensuring transparent and merit-based procedures for appointments, evaluations, and professional standards within the prosecution framework.
“We will continue to provide the HCP with our expertise to assist Albania in meeting EU standards,” Gonzato added.
The Special Prosecution against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), established through the Justice Reform, has contributed to Albania’s integration agenda by addressing impunity at various levels.
In one week, the HCP will initiate the process of selecting the new head of SPAK, succeeding Altin Dumani.
Three years ago, Dumani garnered the majority of votes from the HCP, receiving 5 out of 11 votes at the meeting. (September 11)
