Initially, France did not participate, but President Macron assured Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Paris’s future support in safeguarding Poland’s airspace.
“Ensuring the safety of Europe is our utmost priority. We won’t succumb to Russia’s increasing threats,” declared Macron, noting his communication with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
Alongside France, other NATO allies are expected to bolster air defenses on the alliance’s eastern front. U.K. Defense Secretary John Healy mentioned Wednesday that London is considering further actions, while Germany’s defense ministry announced Thursday an enhanced air defense presence in Poland.
Russia’s drone incursion exposed weaknesses in the ability of Western forces to counter low-cost, mass-produced threats.
