UEFA President Opposes Plans for European Football Matches Abroad

Spanish football officials have announced a regular season match between Villarreal and FC Barcelona scheduled to take place in Miami in December, igniting protests from the continent’s leading supporter advocacy group.

Football Supporters Europe (FSE) has filed a complaint with the European Commission, criticizing “ongoing attempts to deterritorialise European football,” as per a letter acquired by POLITICO.

Critics of the plan argue it compromises competitive integrity, with some teams missing essential home matches due to international relocations, and gradually weakens the ties between clubs and their steadfast local supporters.

EU Sport Commissioner Glenn Micallef, who had previously expressed his “emotional” opposition to European matches occurring outside Europe during a POLITICO interview in May, met with FSE leader Ronan Evain on Wednesday and condemned the plans put forth by Spanish and Italian leagues.

“I’m deeply disappointed by proposals to stage domestic league matches outside Europe,” Micallef stated on social media Wednesday.

“This is the first major test for governance since the Super League. Strong, community-focused clubs are the foundation of the European Sport Model. Shifting competitions overseas isn’t innovation; it’s betrayal,” he further remarked.

His comments provoked an angry reaction from the Italian league, which stated it was “astonished” by Micallef’s “excessive position,” and Spain’s assertive league chief Javier Tebas, who retorted, “I understand the concern, but let’s put things in perspective: we are talking about 1 match out of 380.”

Tebas added: “There are thousands of fans around the world — including Europeans — who deserve the opportunity to see their teams play live at least once.”

Oh, how noble of them to protect the sanctity of football while plotting to sell it off to the highest bidder across the pond. Can’t wait for the day when “local” fans have to book a flight for a home game! 😂✈️

  2. Oh, brilliant move, let’s just take the heart of European football and toss it in a Miami blender, shall we? 🥥🏖️ One match out of 380? Sounds like a recipe for a holiday rather than a league! 😂

Oh, fabulous! Let’s just pack our bags and play footy in Miami—because who needs tradition when you can have sunburns and overpriced drinks? 🍹⚽️

So, let’s pack our bags and take the beautiful game to Miami, eh? Who needs tradition and local passion when you can sip a piña colada while watching Villarreal? 🍹⚽️

Oh, brilliant idea! Because nothing says “local football spirit” like a match played in a sun-soaked Miami, right? 🍹⚽️

Oh sure, let’s just pack our beloved football into a suitcase and ship it off to Miami. Because nothing says ‘community’ like a match played in flip-flops while sipping a piña colada, right? 🍹⚽

Typical UEFA drama, isn’t it? A match in Miami, and suddenly we’re on the brink of football Armageddon! 😂 Just wait till they start charging for the sun in December!

  9. So, let’s just ship the whole league to Miami, shall we? Nothing says “football tradition” like a match with palm trees and piña coladas instead of a rainy pitch in the old country! 🌴🍹

Fancy a little footie in Miami, eh? Next, they’ll have us watching the Tour de France from a beach in Ibiza, just to keep it ‘authentic’. 😂

Seems like the only thing more outrageous than a footie match in Miami is the notion that it’s not a betrayal of our beloved sport. 🤦‍♂️ Next, they’ll be hosting the Champions League on a cruise ship! 🌴⚽️

Imagine that! One match in Miami and suddenly it’s the end of European football as we know it. Next, they’ll have us playing in a theme park with Mickey Mouse as the referee! 😂⚽️

Oh, brilliant move, lads! Who wouldn’t want to watch a game of footy in Miami while the fans back home freeze their socks off? 🍹⚽️

Sure, because who wouldn’t want to swap the charming streets of Barcelona for a sunny Miami beach? Next, let’s play the Champions League in Disneyland, eh? 🌴⚽️

Imagine taking a Sunday stroll only to find your beloved local match in a Miami beach club; what’s next, a pint of lager on the moon? 🍻⚽️
