Meloni Discovers Signs of Hope for Peace Talks in Ukraine Following Alaska Summit

Rome (ANSA) – “At last, there is a glimmer of hope for discussing peace in Ukraine. Italy is contributing alongside its Western partners.” Giorgia Meloni expresses optimism following the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

The Prime Minister, supported by her government, has set a non-negotiable boundary for Brussels: “The agreement remains complex but is finally feasible, particularly after the prolonged stalemate along the front line. Only Ukraine can negotiate the terms and its territories,” Meloni stated after first engaging in a phone call with European leaders and then with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

For Meloni, “the key issue is the provision of security guarantees to prevent further Russian invasions, and this is where the most promising developments have occurred in Anchorage.” She supports the recent European stance: “Only strong and credible guarantees in this area can avert new conflicts and acts of aggression.”

The President of the Council highlighted that “President Trump has revived the Italian concept of security guarantees based on Article 5 of NATO. The proposal begins with a collective security clause that enables Ukraine to receive support from all its allies, including the US, ready to respond if it faces another attack” (August 16).
