ECB President Christine Lagarde Welcomes Design of 1 Euro Bulgarian Coin

SOFIA – The President of the European Central Bank (ECB) Christine Lagarde has expressed her enthusiasm for the design of Bulgaria’s 1 euro coin through a post on Facebook.

“Exciting news for Bulgaria and the eurozone! Here’s a first look at the design of the Bulgarian one euro coin,” Lagarde noted. She highlighted that the coin’s design reflects continuity with Bulgaria’s existing coins and includes symbols that are significant to the nation’s cultural heritage.

Although we need to wait a bit longer for these coins to enter circulation, this preview showcases the elegant national side selected by the Bulgarian National Bank, Lagarde mentioned.

The national side of the Bulgarian one euro coin features St. Ivan Rilski (c. 876-946), a revered Bulgarian spiritual leader known for his hermit lifestyle, miraculous acts, and role as the heavenly protector of the Bulgarian people, as well as the founder of the Rila Monastery. To the right is the Cyrillic inscription “БЪЛГАРИЯ,” and to the left of the saint’s image is the Cyrillic inscription “ЕВРО” along with the year of issuance.

The process for introducing the euro in Bulgaria was initiated on June 4, 2025, when the European Commission and the ECB positively assessed Bulgaria’s readiness to join the eurozone. On July 8, the ECOFIN Council approved Bulgaria’s entry into the currency area, and the European Parliament subsequently endorsed the report on Bulgaria’s adoption of the single European currency with a significant majority.
