MEPs Call for CAP to Be “Strengthened”

The European Conservatives and Reformists Group, one of the mainstream parties in the EU Parliament, has called on the European Commission to safeguard and strengthen the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

It has warned against any attempt to reduce funding in the upcoming legislative proposal for the 2028–2034 period.

ECR Agriculture Coordinator Carlo Fidanza MEP told this website the CAP must be treated not simply as an economic instrument, but as a strategic pillar for Europe’s stability and sovereignty.

“The CAP must be defended and strengthened,”

Fidanza says.

He adds,

“Because the food that we produce, is not just an economic tool, but it is a guarantee for stability and autonomy throughout the entire EU.”

Fidanza emphasised that food security could no longer be taken for granted, pointing to war at Europe’s borders, pressure on global supply chains, and extreme natural events.

“Food is not just a good, it is strategic,”

Fidanza continued.

“And we cannot accept that we depend on third countries increasingly if we want enough good, healthy, nutritious food for our citizens.”

Fidanza warned that any proposal to cut the CAP budget would be unacceptable:

“Therefore, any proposal of a cut to the CAP within or without the single fund will be not only unacceptable but short-sighted.”

Calling for a modernised CAP that supports those who work the land, he said:

“We must defend our farmers. If we don’t, then we put our rural areas at risk and give much of our sovereignty to external forces.”

Fidanza underlined the importance of focusing support on producers who are committed to innovation, quality, and sustainability.

Turning to trade policy, Fidanza cautioned against unfair competition and stressed the importance of reciprocal standards.

“We cannot have agreements that do not have reciprocity, especially in the context of increased extreme natural events,”

He said.

“We need to make sure that we are supporting those who invest in sustainability. This is the CAP that we request and that we will defend, as has been requested by millions of our European farmers.”

Seems like MEPs have suddenly discovered that food doesn’t just magically appear on our plates! Who would’ve thought that agriculture might need, I dunno, some actual support? 🍽️😂

Looks like our MEPs have discovered that food isn’t just a nice-to-have but a “strategic pillar.” Who knew? 🍞💼 Let’s throw more euros at it, shall we?

Oh, fantastic, more calls to “strengthen” the CAP—because clearly, what Europe needs is another round of bureaucratic charm school to remind us how to grow food! 🍅💼

Oh, brilliant! Because clearly, the best way to ensure our food security is to toss even more cash at a policy that’s already a tangled web of bureaucracy. 🍅💸

Looks like our dear MEPs have discovered the secret to world peace: more euros for farming! Who knew that keeping the farmers happy could also keep the continent from imploding? 😂🌾

Just what we needed, another MEP telling us how vital the CAP is – because nothing screams “stability” like bureaucrats in Brussels debating the nuances of agricultural policy over a fine glass of wine. 🍷 Keep the funding coming, lads; nothing says “autonomy” like dependence on our own convoluted regulations!

Oh, brilliant! MEPs want to reinforce the CAP like it’s some sort of magic wand for food security—why not just throw in a few more subsidies while we’re at it? 🍞💰

Typical, isn’t it? MEPs wanting to “strengthen” the CAP while we’re all just trying to strengthen our coffee and patience for the next round of bureaucratic shenanigans. ☕️💼

Seems like our MEPs are having a bit of a déjà vu while calling for a stronger CAP—who would’ve thought farming could be so strategic? 😂 Let’s just hope they remember to send a postcard to Brussels when they finally figure it out!

Oh, brilliant! Because who doesn’t love throwing more money at a system that’s already got more layers than a Danish pastry? 🍰 Keep it coming, lads!

Right, because who wouldn’t want to throw more cash at a policy that’s basically the EU’s equivalent of a farmer’s apron? 🍏💸 Just what we need, more “strategic” food guarantees while the rest of the world looks for a decent baguette. 🥖
