Between July 21 and July 31, 2025, Albania experienced devastating wildfires, prompting the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
As reported by the European Union delegation in Tirana, six countries, including Albania, dealt with intense fires during this timeframe, leading to the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
In response to the assistance request, the European Union deployed firefighting aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, and satellite resources from across Europe to aid in managing the crisis and safeguarding impacted communities.
Firefighting aircraft from Greece, Italy, and Croatia, along with helicopters from Hungary and satellite imagery support through the Copernicus system, were utilized in Albania.
The EU delegation in Tirana stated, “This swift and coordinated response highlights the European Union’s steadfast commitment to supporting partner nations during difficult times — not just with resources but also with solidarity, cooperation, and enduring assistance.”
Thanks to the focused efforts of civil protection teams in Albania, along with favorable weather conditions including lower temperatures and local rainfall, the fires were brought under control and largely extinguished across the country by August 1.
