X Faces Scrutiny in Ireland Over Age Verification for Porn

The regulator has ongoing concerns about non-compliance, particularly regarding the availability of parental controls.

The regulator requested X to provide information by July 25 and is prepared to take further action if non-compliance with the Code is evident, as stated by the spokesperson.

In June, the Coimisiún na Meán pressured X to comply with the code, issuing a statutory information request for a description of its compliance measures. X must respond by August 8, an extension from the original July 22 deadline. Failure to respond may result in a criminal charge and a fine up to €500,000.

Musk’s platform is challenging the code in Ireland’s High Court, contesting certain provisions and its application to X. A decision on this challenge is expected by Friday, July 25.

Ireland’s new media law implements the European Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) nationally. Companies with EU headquarters in Ireland must adhere to Irish regulations.

X did not provide a comment before publication.

Previously, an X spokesperson stated the company is committed to complying with all relevant laws and regulations, including Ireland’s code, and is prioritizing its implementation.

The French government is considering classifying X, Bluesky, and Reddit as porn platforms, which would subject them to stricter age verification requirements.

Seems like X is taking the whole “age verification” thing as seriously as a cat in a dog park. 🤔 Can’t wait to see how they’ll charm the Irish regulators—maybe a pint will help? 🍻

Seems like X is really committed to keeping the little ones safe from “adult entertainment” while simultaneously playing hide and seek with regulations. Classic move, eh? 😂 #ComplianceGoals
