Zelensky supports legislation ending the independence of anti-corruption agencies

Kiev – Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has requested clarifications from President Zelensky regarding the swift enactment of legislation that undermines the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (Nabu) and the specialized anti-corruption prosecutor’s office (SAP), according to a spokesperson on Wednesday.

The spokesperson highlighted that adherence to the rule of law and the fight against corruption are foundational to the European project: “As a candidate country, Ukraine must fully comply with these standards. Compromise is not an option.”

Earlier, the Ukrainian president expressed support for the new law, citing issues related to the effectiveness of the anti-corruption agencies.

This legislation has provoked significant backlash from Ukrainian civil society. Zelensky stated that he is attentive to societal concerns and vowed to “resolve existing contradictions” following discussions with law enforcement leaders, including those from the anti-corruption agencies now under the direct oversight of the attorney general, who is appointed by the president. Looks like Zelensky has found a new way to “fight” corruption—by putting it on a nice, cozy leash! Who needs independent agencies when you can just appoint your mates, right? 😂💼

Oh, brilliant move, Zelensky! Nothing says “I’m serious about fighting corruption” quite like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse. 🐦💼

Oh, splendid move, Zelensky! Nothing says “I’m serious about tackling corruption” quite like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse. Just what we need, more “effective” oversight by those who see a bribe as a friendly tip! 😂💼

Seems like Zelensky’s version of “fixing” anti-corruption is to just put a nice bow on it and call it a day. Who needs independence when you can have a cozy little chat with the attorney general, eh? 🤷‍♂️

Typical move, isn’t it? Who needs pesky anti-corruption agencies when you’ve got a perfectly good attorney general on a short leash? 🤷‍♂️

Funny how the fight against corruption starts with giving it a comfy chair at the table, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Typical political shenanigans, just like trying to sell ice to an Eskimo. 🥶

Oh, brilliant move by Zelensky! Nothing says “trust us” quite like putting the anti-corruption agencies on a nice, tight leash. 🤷‍♂️ Just what we need, a little less independence and a lot more oversight—sounds like a recipe for success, innit?
