SOFIA – During the Council of the European Union (EU) meeting on research competitiveness, Bulgaria voiced its support for increasing the European budget for research and innovation. Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Valchev represented the nation, as reported by the Ministry of Education and Science (MES).
EU member states showed willingness to enhance collaboration in research, including sharing research resources. The aim is to establish leading European research centers in key areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, biotechnology, and space technologies.
Minister Valchev highlighted the necessity of developing robust innovation ecosystems around universities to attract and retain young talent. He cited the national example of INSAIT at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski,” which has successfully drawn in prominent scientists and emerging researchers globally since its inception in 2021, while also keeping Bulgarian talents within the country, according to the MES.
The ministers provided initial feedback on the new EU framework program for research and innovation introduced by Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva. Key proposals include nearly doubling the budget, focusing on scientific achievements, innovations, competitiveness, international cooperation, and enhancing the connection between science and society.
Bulgaria praised the ambitious funding and stressed the need for simplified procedures, broader access, inclusivity, and creating added value for the Union. The country plans to thoroughly review the suggested measures, including interaction with the European Fund for Competitiveness, the ministry noted.
European Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation, Ekaterina Zaharieva, emphasized the importance of increased activity from Bulgarian companies, scientists, and universities during her visit to Sofia earlier this year. She noted that Bulgaria has received 158 million euros under the Horizon Europe Program. Zaharieva stated that significant investments in innovative solutions in digital technologies, energy, and mobility are essential for boosting economic growth and advancing Bulgaria and Europe.
