UK Sanctions Russian Spies Tied to Mariupol Attacks

Unit 26165 has been accused of disrupting foreign aid to Ukraine by targeting ports and transport hubs, according to the British government, while the French government attributed cyber attacks during the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris to this unit.

Unit 29155 is alleged to have deployed a wiper malware named “WhisperGate” on over 70 Ukrainian government systems before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Sanctions announced on Friday targeted spies responsible for infecting Yulia Skripal’s phone with malware five years before the 2018 nerve agent Novichok attack attempt against her and her father, former Russian spy Sergei Skripal, in Salisbury, England.

The FCDO reported that Russia has targeted media outlets, telecoms providers, political institutions, and energy infrastructure in the U.K.

NATO allies issued a statement supporting the U.K., saying: “We strongly condemn Russia’s malicious cyber activities, which constitute a threat to Allied security” and “we stand in solidarity” with the U.K.’s actions.

Just what we needed—more spies with a penchant for malware and a flair for the dramatic! 🇬🇧💻 Bravo, lads, your creativity in cyber chaos is truly… inspiring! 😂

Oh brilliant, more sanctions! Because clearly, those spies were just waiting for a polite nudge from the UK to stop their little cyber escapades. 🙄

Just what we needed, more sanctions on spies who clearly took a wrong turn at the Kremlin. If only they’d put as much effort into their espionage as they do into wreaking havoc, eh? 🤷‍♂️

  4. Seems like the UK is playing whack-a-mole with Russian spies—just when you think you’ve got them cornered, another one pops up in Mariupol. 🤷‍♂️ But hey, at least our cyber defenses are getting more exercise than a retired footballer! ⚽️💼

You’d think these spies would invest in a decent VPN instead of making a right mess of things, eh? 🤦‍♂️ I mean, disrupting aid for Ukraine while the rest of us are trying to keep our WiFi from crashing during the rugby—classic!

Really, UK? Sanctioning spies for using malware? That’s almost as effective as sending a postcard to a tank brigade. 😂

Oh brilliant, just what we needed—more sanctions on spies like they’re going out of style! 😏 At this rate, they’ll be handing out participation trophies for every cyber attack they attempt! 🏆

Seems like the UK’s found a new hobby in sanctioning Russian spies—who knew targeting ports and Olympic dreams was a summer sport? 🎯 Just another day in the grand game of geopolitics, innit? 🇬🇧🤷‍♂️

Enforcement of EU Sanctions in Practice

A sanctions package may appear decisive in Brussels but can falter at the border, within a bank’s compliance team, or in a national courtroom. This is crucial to how EU sanctions are enforced: the European Union establishes the legal framework, but detection, freezing, licensing, investigation, and punishment are mainly handled by member states.
