BRUSSELS (ANP) – The prospect of a strong concluding statement from the EU summit, much less any definitive actions, appears slim. Several member states, including Germany, are hesitant to adopt a confrontational approach towards Israel regarding the human rights violations occurring in Gaza.
Martin stated, “I will express to my European colleagues that the European populace finds it baffling that Europe seems incapable of applying pressure on Israel to cease its military actions in Gaza and to halt the ongoing devastation of children and innocent civilians.”
Sánchez described the situation in Gaza as a “catastrophic instance of genocide.” He advocates for an immediate suspension of the EU’s association agreement with Israel. This proposal was echoed by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares during a meeting with EU foreign ministers on Monday. Although Ireland supports this initiative, it recognizes that achieving it is unlikely due to the necessity of unanimous approval from all 27 member states.
The Irish Prime Minister noted that certain aspects of the association agreement could potentially be suspended without requiring unanimous consent. Additionally, discussions about imposing sanctions on settlers in the West Bank and targeting Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, as some nations have already done, could be considered.
