German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized the importance of integrating the international legal order into German identity while advising caution against a potential conflict with the International Criminal Court regarding the ICC’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“We should particularly make the international legal order a part of our identity,” Steinmeier stated in a radio interview with Deutschlandfunk. However, he suggested avoiding a conflict with the ICC.
“This is an appeal not to disregard international law but to refrain from testing it in this instance,” Steinmeier remarked. The interview, set to air on Sunday, was previewed by German agency DPA.
Steinmeier was questioned about whether German Chancellor Friedrich Merz might overlook the ICC’s warrant against Netanyahu. After winning the German elections earlier this year, Merz indicated that Berlin would “find ways and means” for Netanyahu to visit and leave Germany “without being arrested.”
