Brussels – Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala stated that the Czech Republic supports maintaining the European Union’s association agreement with Israel following Thursday’s summit in Brussels. He noted that discussions regarding the Middle East are complex, with varying opinions among EU member states.
“The Czech Republic stands among those advocating against the termination of the association agreement, as it would hinder our dialogue opportunities,” Fiala told ČTK. “We believe this is the most rational stance and should be the prevailing view,” he added. In contrast, countries such as Spain and Ireland advocate for a different approach.
At the end of May, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced plans to reevaluate the association agreement with Israel in light of the dire situation in the Gaza Strip, especially concerning human rights violations under Article 2. International scrutiny on Israel has escalated recently following an intensification of military actions in Gaza.
This past Monday, Kallas provided foreign ministers with the findings of the review, which suggested that Israel’s actions might breach the terms of the association agreement. Further discussions are expected at the foreign ministers’ meeting in July. (June 27)
