European Parliament Moves to Protect MEPs’ Reputations from Belgian Actions

In a recent instance, MEP Giusi Princi was named in Parliament due to a request from Belgian authorities to lift her immunity for an investigation into alleged corruption linked to the Chinese tech company Huawei. This request was soon withdrawn.

“The Parliament, at several levels, is keen to convey the message to Belgian authorities that they need to act up and be more professional,” said a high-ranking Parliament official, speaking anonymously on sensitive matters. “Their mistakes and carelessness can extremely damage the reputation of members and EU institutions.”

Under the plans conveyed by Metsola to political group leaders, she could require requesting authorities to provide essential information before publicly announcing immunity-waiver requests. Currently, any request, regardless of its content, must be announced in the full plenary session of Parliament.

Parliament lawmakers criticize Belgium’s failure to secure any convictions in the 2022 Qatargate cash-for-influence scandal. Michel Claise, the judge overseeing the case, resigned in June 2023 due to alleged conflicts of interest, and the defendants have questioned the legality of the proceedings, which are being reviewed by the courts, according to a spokesperson for the Belgian prosecutor.

“If proceedings begin soon and convictions follow, then the process has worked,” said Green MEP Daniel Freund. “But if no one is convicted, if key evidence is ruled inadmissible, or if procedural errors derail the case, then we do have a serious problem.”

Isn’t it just delightful when the EU decides to give Belgium a lesson in professional behavior? Maybe they should start by teaching them how to keep their own house in order before trying to protect the reputations of MEPs. 😂💼

Typical Belgian efficiency, eh? Can’t even lift an immunity before dropping the ball—who needs a circus when you’ve got this show? 😂💼

Looks like Belgium’s got a real knack for turning scandals into heated discussions over croissants and coffee! 🍩 When in doubt, just withdraw your requests like a bad Belgian waffle flop! 😂

Looks like Belgium’s got its hands full – maybe they should try selling waffles instead of scandals next time. 🍻 Can’t wait to see how this “professionalism” shakes out; it’s like a soap opera, but with more bureaucracy and less charm.

Looks like Belgium’s got a real talent for turning parliamentary drama into a slapstick comedy show. Maybe next they can launch a reality series titled “Who Needs Justice When You Have Immunity?” 🤷‍♂️🇧🇪

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “professionalism” quite like the European Parliament needing to remind Belgium how to do its job. Who knew reputation management was such a full-time gig? 😂

Just what we needed, a parliamentary game of hot potato with immunity – because who doesn’t love a bit of political theatre over a corruption scandal? 🤡 Next up: Belgian authorities to host a masterclass on “How to Be Incredibly Inept.” 🍻

Oh, brilliant, nothing says “professionalism” quite like a Parliament trying to save face after a Belgian comedy show of legal blunders. Just when you thought the EU couldn’t get more farcical, here comes the immunity circus! 🍿😂

Mayor Collboni has made the removal of STRs a key part of his housing strategy. The plan seems straightforward: eliminate STRs and the homes will return to local residents. However, the data suggests otherwise. The city council has not shown how removing legally licensed STRs would place these houses on the market.
The city’s own research contradicts their aim. A study by the Barcelona Insti
