Playground Riding Ban Enforced in Heusden-Zolder

Heusden-Zolder (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – From 1 July, Heusden-Zolder will prohibit cyclists and moped riders from using or crossing playgrounds, aiming to improve safety for children and families.

The recent annoyance is the justification given by the municipality. Noise pollution was generated by loud mopeds and young individuals riding fat bikes through the playgrounds at high speeds. 

A GAS fine awaits anyone who continues to break the rules. 

“The number of reports has increased sharply recently,”

explains mayor Mario Borremans (GOED). 

“Fat Bikes in particular have become very popular with young people, but they race across our playgrounds at every opportunity. That is extremely dangerous for children. They need to be able to play safely.”

However, the Belgium municipality decides to outlaw all mopeds and bicycles. 

“That makes it clear. Moreover, the mopeds also caused noise pollution.”

blank”>Anyone who violates the ban can expect sanctions.

“It has been agreed with the police that it will be closely monitored,”

Says Borremans.

“You risk a GAS fine or a normal PV, depending on the seriousness of the violation.”

Every playground will have conspicuous prohibited notices posted by the town. The city highlights that there is now enough room to park your bike close to the playground.

“We will of course continue to promote cycling. That is why we will continue to ensure that you can park your bike nearby”,

The mayor concludes.

A similar prohibition was implemented by Maasmechelen a month ago in the vicinity of the park, the sports hall, and the playground. 

What measures are in place to enforce the new playground restrictions?

Despite the ban, anyone found riding a bike or a motorbike through a playground faces a GAS fine, a municipal administrative penalty intended to discourage breaching the rules.

In order to make sure that locals are aware of the new rules and the rationale behind them, the municipality made the prohibition public by highlighting recent nuisances.

Usually, enforcement entails designated supervisors or local officials keeping an eye on playgrounds to spot infractions and take swift action.

These enforcement actions are in line with standard playground safety procedures, which ensure a secure and tranquil atmosphere for kids by combining surveillance, penalties, and explicit rules. By enforcing fines, playground areas are protected from the noise and safety risks posed by noisy vehicles and high-speed riding by discouraging cyclists and moped riders from visiting.
