Belgium urges response to Israeli settlements

The International Court of Justice in The Hague provided a non-binding advisory opinion last summer on Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories. The Court determined that this occupation violates international law and called for Israel’s withdrawal from these areas.

Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot noted that the European Union has yet to act on this recommendation. He has initiated a letter, endorsed by Belgium and supported by Spain, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Slovenia, Portugal, and Poland, urging Kallas to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the advisory opinion. This evaluation could pave the way for European sanctions on products originating from the occupied regions.

On Monday, foreign ministers will convene in Brussels to discuss their position on Israel. A report from Kallas highlights that Israeli actions in Gaza infringe upon the core principles of the EU-Israel association agreement, particularly concerning human rights.
