The decision, announced a day before the final negotiations with EU countries and MEPs, means the EU will not ask companies to provide verified information for their green claims. “The European Commission has the right of initiative to make but also withdraw a proposal after its own assessment of the legislative process,” said Stefan de Keersmaecker, a Commission spokesperson. On Wednesday, POLITICO reported that the European People’s Party (EPP) sent a letter to Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall, asking the EU executive to withdraw its proposal, threatening to not support any negotiation outcomes. On Tuesday, POLITICO also reported that the Commission was considering pulling back another green law on forest health monitoring. It is rare for the Commission to withdraw a proposal, usually occurring if co-legislators cannot agree or if a compromise doesn’t align with the law’s original intent.
