European Parliament (Strasbourg, France) – On Tuesday, MEPs in Strasbourg voted to eliminate statutes of limitations for sexual violence against minors, a topic of widespread discussion across Europe.
With a significant majority in the initial vote (599 in favor, 2 opposed, and 62 abstentions), the European Parliament must now enter negotiations with member states and the Commission, which seeks to extend but not abolish the statutes of limitations.
“Justice should have no time constraints in cases of sexual violence against children,” stated Dutch MEP Jeroen Lenaers (EPP, right), who is responsible for the proposal in Parliament.
Statutes of limitations, which determine the timeframe during which legal action can be taken, vary greatly among European countries.
In some nations, these periods are quite short, expiring before victims reach the age of 40.
In France, the statute of limitations for rape is set at 30 years from the victim’s coming of age and 20 years from the occurrence of the crime if the victim was an adult. (June 17, 2025)
