Romania Enhances Midia Port via POPAM Program, Boosting Fishermen’s Activities in the Black Sea Region

Bucharest – Romania’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is backing the activities of Black Sea fishermen by funding the modernization and expansion of the Midia port’s fishing infrastructure in Constanța County. The General Directorate of Fisheries – Management Authority for the Operational Program for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs (DGP AM POPAM) is overseeing a total financial allocation of 9,282,910 euros for this initiative.

Enhancing the infrastructure of this multifunctional port will significantly improve fishermen’s operations by facilitating the landing and market preparation of catches from marine and inland waters, while also ensuring product quality and enabling more efficient monitoring of fishing activities and data collection, thereby contributing to sustainable fishing in the region.

The Operational Program for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs (POPAM) 2021-2027 is financed by the European Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Fund (FEPAM), one of five European Structural and Investment Funds (ESI) designed to promote economic growth and job recovery in Europe. FEPAM aims to bolster the common fisheries policy (CFP), the EU maritime policy, and international commitments related to ocean governance, particularly in alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

For the 2021-2027 programming period, Romania has been allocated a total of 232,072,724 euros for this program, with the EU contribution amounting to 162,450,905 euros.

The program’s implementation seeks to foster: the development of sustainable marine and inland commercial fishing; competitive aquaculture that makes efficient use of available resources; organization within the fishing market, which includes strengthening fishing organizations and supporting short marketing chains; and the development of fishing areas that leverage opportunities in the sustainable blue economy. Brilliant! So, Romania’s throwing almost 10 million euros at a port so fishermen can have a proper place to land their catch. Next, maybe they’ll fund a new training program for them to learn how to fish… or maybe even how to count! 😂💰

  6. So, a fancy port upgrade for our fishermen, eh? I guess now they can land their fish in style while sipping espresso and discussing the latest fish gossip—just what the Black Sea needed! 🐟💼

Looks like Romania’s got their fishing game on point now, eh? With all that cash flying around, I hope the fishermen are ready to swap their rods for spreadsheets! 😏💶

  10. Looks like Romania’s finally decided to give its fishermen a fighting chance on the Black Sea—let’s hope they can catch more than just government bureaucracy with that €9 million! 🎣💸
