Von der Leyen and Kallas Urge Restraint in the Middle East

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, along with the head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, urged for restraint and a cessation of escalation in the Middle East on Friday. They expressed their willingness to support “any diplomatic efforts.”

Von der Leyen noted that the situation in the Middle East is extremely troubling.

In a social media statement, she stressed, “Europe calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, to immediately cease escalation, and to refrain from retaliatory actions.”

She highlighted that “a diplomatic solution is now more urgent than ever, for the sake of regional stability and global security.”

“Diplomacy remains the best way forward, and I am prepared to support any diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation,” Kallas reiterated.

On Friday morning, Israel conducted strikes against Iran, targeting nuclear and military facilities. This operation is reported to have resulted in the deaths of high-ranking Iranian commanders and at least six nuclear energy scientists. (06.13.2025)

Looks like the diplomats are at it again – telling people to “exercise restraint” while the fireworks are already going off. Classic EU move, isn’t it? 🎇🙄

Seems like von der Leyen and Kallas are ready to win the Nobel Peace Prize from their comfy offices while the rest of us are left to ponder what “maximum restraint” looks like in a game of geopolitical chess. 😂

Oh sure, because a heartfelt plea from Brussels is exactly what the Middle East needs right now 🙄. Maybe they should just send a postcard next time – “Wish you were here, but could you please stop blowing each other up?” ✌️💼

Oh sure, because a heartfelt plea for “restraint” from Brussels has always been the magic wand for global crises. 🤷‍♂️ Must be nice to have coffee and chat about peace while the world’s on fire! ☕🔥

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “let’s have a quiet dinner” quite like a couple of high-ranking officials waving their napkins while the fireworks are going off next door. 🍷💥

Seems like von der Leyen and Kallas think a polite suggestion will do the trick, bless their hearts! 🤦‍♂️ Maybe next time they should try sending a strongly worded letter with a bow on it! 📨💼
