Golob and Sanchez in Madrid Discuss EU Response to Gaza Events

Madrid – Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez have called for an urgent end to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza after their discussions in Madrid. They urged the EU to back international legal frameworks for investigating alleged war crimes in the region.

The leaders highlighted the need for an immediate halt to the humanitarian disaster and violence in Gaza in a joint statement made during Golob’s visit to Spain. They stressed the importance of all parties adhering to international law, including humanitarian and human rights laws.

The statement advocates for maintaining UN-led humanitarian efforts in Gaza, opposing Israel-led aid initiatives which they believe could exacerbate the displacement of Palestinians.

Slovenia and Spain also reaffirmed their support for a political resolution to the Middle Eastern conflict, endorsing a two-state solution.

The two nations reiterated the need for a formal assessment of Israel’s compliance with Article 2 of the Association Agreement between the EU and Israel. They called for increased sanctions against violent Israeli settlers and those hindering the peace process, as well as an arms embargo on Israel.

“We continue to urge the European Union to support international legal mechanisms for investigating alleged war crimes and to ensure justice for all victims,” the joint statement stated.

Additionally, they discussed the Western Balkans, with Sanchez noting that Slovenia and Spain, drawing from their historical experiences, advocate for a robust and integrated EU and prioritize EU enlargement as a strategic goal for the union. (May 29)

Looks like Golob and Sanchez are really throwing their hats in the ring for the Nobel Peace Prize—good luck with that! 😂 With all this chatter about international law, you’d think they were trying to settle a pub argument, not a geopolitical crisis. 🍻

Nothing says “let’s fix the world” quite like a chat in Madrid over tapas while the rest of us are left waiting for the EU to actually do something. 🍷🧐
