EU and Six Member States Ratify Treaty for High Seas Protection

The European Union, along with Cyprus, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Portugal, and Slovenia, has submitted their ratification instruments for a treaty focused on protecting essential marine ecosystems to the United Nations. This treaty, which was adopted in June 2023 following extensive negotiations, was previously ratified by France and Spain earlier this year, according to the European mission to the UN.

Costas Kadis, the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, described this as a “historic step towards the protection of the world’s oceans and the preservation of the delicate balance of the planet’s ecosystems” and urged all nations to take similar action.

This increases the total number of ratifications to 29, still short of the 60 required for the treaty to take effect.

Although France and environmental organizations had anticipated that the treaty would be enacted during the UN Ocean Conference in Nice from June 9 to 13, that now appears unlikely. The treaty will only become effective 120 days after the 60th ratification, which is projected for May 28, 2025.

Oh fab, more paperwork for the oceans! 🐟🌊 Can’t wait for the sea turtles to throw a party when we hit that magical 60 ratifications. Cheers to procrastination! 🍷

Right, so we’ve got some big wigs in the EU making a “historic step” while the oceans are probably rolling their eyes. By the time this treaty kicks in, it’ll be as relevant as last year’s fashion—120 days? Give me a break! 🤦‍♂️🌊

Looks like we’ve made a “historic” leap into the deep blue, eh? Can’t wait for the oceans to start sending thank-you notes while we wait for 31 more signatures… 🐟💼

Oh, splendid! Just what we needed, another treaty to gather dust while the oceans drown in plastic. 🌊 Cheers to the EU for making history—one ratification at a time! 🥂

Just what we needed, another treaty to protect the high seas – because clearly, the oceans are just sitting there waiting for our bureaucratic seal of approval. 🌊💼 Who knew fish needed paperwork?

Can’t wait for this “historic step” to finally make a splash! 🐟 By 2025, we’ll have oceans so protected, even the fish will need a passport. 😂

Oh, fabulous, 29 ratifications! Almost halfway to that magical 60—let’s pop the champagne when we hit 31, shall we? 🍾🌊

Oh, marvellous! Nothing says “ocean protection” like a treaty that’s still a couple of years away from actually doing anything. At this rate, by the time it’s in effect, we might just need a lifeboat to save the fish! 🐟💦

Brilliant, isn’t it? A bunch of EU countries finally getting around to protecting the high seas—almost as if they just discovered the ocean is more than a giant fish tank! 😏🌊

Oh great, 29 ratifications for a treaty that’s still got a few more to go before it actually does something. Talk about a slow boat to China! 🌊😏
