Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Wopke Hoekstra, the Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero Emissions, and Clean Development, at Maximos Mansion. The conversation focused on topics within the Commissioner’s portfolio, particularly the EU’s climate obligations, economic growth, and the competitiveness of European industry.
The Prime Minister highlighted Greece’s positive trajectory towards meeting the EU’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, showcasing a balanced energy mix with a growing share of renewable energy and underscoring the transitional role of natural gas.
Mitsotakis addressed the distortions in the energy market that result in significant electricity price differences among EU nations. He argued that such disparities are unacceptable in a single market, emphasized the importance of interconnections among member states, and pointed out that the green transition should align with the European economy’s competitiveness.
Discussions also covered the European tax framework’s significance for economic development, strategic autonomy, and internal EU convergence.
At the start of their meeting, the Prime Minister and the Commissioner engaged in the following dialogue:
Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Your portfolio covers a wide range of issues, and I’ve noted your productive meetings with relevant ministers. It’s always a pleasure to host you. On sunny days like this, with normal winds and energy consumption below summer levels, we generate a substantial portion of our energy needs from renewable sources. Greece is at the forefront of the green transition.
We are equally focused on ensuring that this transition does not compromise the competitiveness of both the European and Greek economies, particularly the industrial sector. We have much to discuss, always keeping an eye on the future. It’s refreshing that our meetings with European representatives are now centered on future opportunities rather than past challenges.
We aim to contribute broadly to the European discussion on these complex issues. We are here to support the agenda.
Wopke Hoekstra: Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister, for your hospitality and for the excellent work of your government. I commend Greece’s impressive achievements in the economy, particularly its connection to clean development and climate efforts. Our meetings have been very fruitful.
The core of European policy should focus on the link between competitiveness, climate, and energy independence, which I see in practice here. This serves as an inspiring example for all of us in Europe as we move forward. Thank you for your warm welcome and the remarkable work you’re doing. Thank you.” (27/5/25)
