The most recent discussions on the subject took place in early April in Frankfurt to discuss the leadership transition at WEF, with the current chair remaining until early 2027 when his successor would be ready.
He mentioned having planned for Lagarde to succeed him for several years. An ECB spokesperson, however, stated that President Lagarde is committed to her role and intends to complete her term.
Lagarde regularly attends the Davos meetings in January and joined the WEF’s board of trustees in 2019 during her time as managing director of the International Monetary Fund.
In a statement, the WEF noted they are unable to comment on any possible confidential discussions between their former chairman and Lagarde. They also mentioned that they had no prior information about Villa Mundi and that the venue is currently being used by their staff as part of the Forum’s ongoing work.
