Germany Reaffirms Support for Ukraine While Urging Diplomatic Resolution
Germany remains committed to supporting Ukraine militarily even as it intensifies efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed this week.
“We are not overlooking any possible avenues toward a diplomatic resolution,” Merz said during a recent press conference. “However, we are realistic: this won’t be achieved in the short term.”
His comments follow renewed indirect negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, brokered with the help of Turkey. While the talks have led to some developments — including a recent prisoner exchange — substantial progress remains elusive.
Kyiv continues to call for an immediate ceasefire, but Moscow’s demands have been deemed unacceptable by Ukrainian officials, further stalling peace efforts.
Merz also emphasized the need for transatlantic and European unity in responding to the war. Germany, he said, is maintaining close coordination with EU partners and actively engaging with U.S. lawmakers to ensure a cohesive response going forward.
“It is in America’s interest—as well as Europe’s—that we stay on the same page,” Merz added, noting broad bipartisan backing in Washington for continued joint action on Ukraine.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, has called on NATO allies to push for a negotiated settlement. He has also expressed frustration with what he sees as slow progress toward launching meaningful talks.
