Brussels – During her inaugural visit to Brussels, Slovenia’s President Nataša Pirc Musar accused Israel of genocide in Gaza. In her speech to Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and during discussions at EU institutions, she highlighted the union’s enlargement as a crucial geopolitical necessity.
“What is happening is genocide,” Pirc Musar stated to Slovenian reporters in Brussels, referring to the ongoing military operations by Israel against Hamas in Gaza, which have persisted for over a year and a half. She also expressed her disapproval of the developments in the Middle East in her address to the European Parliament.
On the EU’s response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israel has blocked humanitarian aid since early March, Pirc Musar acknowledged the differing positions among member states. However, she stressed that even those with close ties to Israel should uphold humanitarian law.
The Middle Eastern conflict was a key topic in her discussions with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, both of whom assured her of the EU’s intention to play a more active role in negotiating peace in the region.
An additional focal point of the president’s visit was the issue of the EU’s enlargement, which she described not only as a geopolitical necessity but also a moral obligation stemming from the commitments made by the EU.
Pirc Musar engaged in talks about the accession of new member states with European Commissioner Marta Kos. Following their meeting, she revealed their shared vision that enlargement to the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova is more than a mere technical process; it represents a strategic investment in the future, peace, and stability of Europe.
“Supporting enlargement equates to building a stronger, safer, and united EU,” the European Commissioner remarked after the meeting, emphasizing it as a foundation for stability in Europe and its neighboring regions. She expressed gratitude to the president for her dedication to the enlargement process. (May 21)
