Paris – A coalition of approximately fifteen European organizations, including France’s UFC-Que Choisir and CLCV, has urged the European Commission to investigate the hand luggage fee policies of seven low-cost airlines.
The airlines in question—EasyJet, Norwegian, Ryanair, Transavia, Volotea, Vueling, and Wizzair—are accused of imposing unfair charges on consumers, according to the Confederation of Consumption, Housing, and Living Environment (CLCV). This initiative is supported by 15 other NGOs that are part of the European Consumer Union (BEUC).
The CLCV highlights that a 2014 ruling by the Court of Justice of the EU established that “the transportation of hand luggage cannot incur additional charges, provided it meets reasonable criteria for weight and dimensions, along with compliance with safety regulations.”
Despite this, the collective of associations claims that the aforementioned airlines are levying fees for hand luggage that they deem “oversized” even when it adheres to acceptable size limits. (May 21, 2025)
