Sint-Margriete (Eurotoday) – In an inspiring effort to combat food waste, 6,000 kilos of misshapen carrots grown by farmers in Sint-Margriete have been saved from being discarded after being rejected by supermarkets.
The food rescue initiative was led by the collective known as Waste Warriors, successfully turning what could have been food loss into a sustainability victory. All the imperfect carrots were ultimately sold, with 1,000 kilograms donated to a local food bank to help families in need.
The carrots came from organic farmers Pieter-Jan and Maarten of Livinushof, located in Sint-Margriete near Sint-Laureins in East Flanders. These six tons of vegetables, deemed too oddly shaped for traditional supermarket standards, faced disposal—until Waste Warriors stepped in.
The ‘rescue mission’ was organized to ensure the carrots, all perfectly edible, were put to good use—and the response was overwhelming.
“In less than 48 hours, 500 carrot packages (weighing a total of 2,500 kilograms) were sold through our platform,”
reported Waste Warriors, which is dedicated to fighting food waste across Belgium and beyond.
This successful campaign also enabled the donation of 1,000 kilograms of carrots to the food bank, allowing nutritious food to reach families who need it most.
“It’s wonderful to see that a residual flow can simultaneously create awareness, consumption, and solidarity,”
said Thomas Schiltz of Waste Warriors, celebrating the multi-dimensional impact of the campaign.
In addition to individual purchases, several companies—including Foodbag, Davai Dumplings, and large-scale kitchens—also joined in by buying the so-called “ugly” carrots to use in meals for their customers.
Taste and Quality: Are “Ugly” Carrots Just as Good?
Despite their appearance, many farmers and consumers argue that misshapen or “ugly” carrots are just as delicious—if not more so—than their perfectly shaped counterparts. Often grown organically and with minimal processing, these carrots can offer richer taste and better texture.
In contrast, supermarket carrots are typically selected for their uniform look and extended shelf life, sometimes sacrificing flavor. Interestingly, “baby carrots” sold in stores are often carved from larger, misshapen carrots, and some consumers find these processed versions less flavorful than full-sized, natural carrots.
As perceptions shift, studies and customer feedback continue to debunk the myth that appearance equates to quality. “Ugly” carrots remain a nutritious, eco-friendly, and flavorful food choice—and campaigns like this one are helping reduce food waste one crooked root at a time.
