EU Criticizes Israel for Firing ‘Warning Shots’ at Diplomatic Delegation

A diplomatic incident occurred involving the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and an international delegation visiting the West Bank city of Jenin. According to the Palestinian Authority, delegates from the European Union, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, Russia, China, and other countries were present during the event, which reportedly involved live gunfire.

“The IDF regrets the inconvenience caused,” the Israeli military stated, adding that an investigation into the incident would be conducted and that the governments of the diplomats involved would be informed of the findings.

The Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the event, calling it “a heinous crime committed by the Israeli occupation forces” and accused the military of “deliberately targeting by live fire an accredited diplomatic delegation.”

Footage shared by the Palestinian Authority on social media appears to show members of the diplomatic group fleeing for safety as gunshots can be heard in the background.

The incident came just one day after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU would review its political and economic ties with Israel in response to the ongoing military campaign in Gaza and the accompanying humanitarian crisis.

Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani publicly responded, stating on social media that he had summoned the Israeli ambassador to Rome to seek “official clarifications on what happened in Jenin.”
