Ljubljana – Slovenian agricultural groups have united in a pan-European campaign aimed at raising awareness about the critical need to preserve the EU’s common agricultural policy. A memorandum outlining their position was presented today to Jerneja Jug Jerše, the head of the European Commission’s representation in Slovenia, by Jože Podgoršek, the president of the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia (KGZS).
As Europe faces a range of challenges, including geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and the impacts of climate change, these agricultural representatives underscored the importance of food security for ensuring the EU’s strategic autonomy. They stressed that a robust, unified, and well-funded agricultural policy is essential for maintaining food security, as communicated by KGZS following the memorandum’s submission.
The campaign also aims to address concerns within the agricultural sector regarding proposals to consolidate EU agricultural funding into a single fund, which could threaten the future of the common agricultural policy. The memorandum warned, “Without a clear and guaranteed budget allocation for supporting European agriculture, the European agricultural policy could collapse like a house of cards.”
This initiative coincides with today’s annual conference on the EU budget in Brussels, where discussions included proposed modifications to the union’s multiannual budget for 2028-2034. Supported by the European agricultural organization Copa-Cogeca, the campaign is taking place across all twenty-seven EU member states. (May 20)
