Kortenaken (Eurotoday) – Firefighters successfully brought a 50-meter roadside blaze under control in Waanrode, near Kortenaken. Authorities are urging the public not to carelessly discard cigarette butts due to the heightened fire risk during dry conditions.
Jeroen Ameel of the Flemish Brabant East Emergency Service Zone stated that the fire, which stretched across 50 meters, was likely sparked by the ongoing drought in the region.
The roadside fire was the main source of the heavy smoke reported in Waanrode. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames quickly, minimizing further damage.
Although the fire was swiftly tackled, more than 50 meters of vegetation had already been burned. Once again, both the municipality of Kortenaken and local fire services are stressing the importance of fire prevention, particularly urging residents and visitors not to throw away cigarette butts.
“It is never allowed to throw cigarette butts on the ground, but now with this persistent dry weather it is certainly not allowed.
If you are having a barbecue, be careful and have sand and water ready. Do not make an open fire, not even in your own garden and certainly not in a nature reserve,”
added Ameel.
What measures are being taken to prevent future roadside fires in the Kortenaken area?
One of the key strategies being implemented is the maintenance of roadside vegetation. By regularly mowing, pruning, and removing dry plant matter, authorities aim to reduce the amount of flammable material next to roads. Keeping grass short—around 10 cm—during fire-prone seasons helps significantly lower fire risk.
Fuel-free buffer zones alongside roads, such as cleared verges and designated pull-over lanes, are another preventative measure. These barriers reduce the chances of fire ignition, particularly in areas like picnic spots or rest areas where people might unintentionally start fires with discarded cigarettes or warm vehicle components.
Public awareness campaigns also play a crucial role. By educating both local residents and motorists on fire risks during droughts, these campaigns encourage safe behaviors—such as refraining from open flames, promptly reporting fires, and avoiding littering cigarette butts.
