Brussel(Pou)belle Cleans Alhambra, Collects 10 Bags of Trash

Brussels (Eurotoday) – Brussel(Pou)belle and the City of Brussels recently joined forces for a clean-up operation in the Alhambra district, successfully collecting 10 bags of litter. Four individuals were fined €550 for illegal dumping. Anas Ben Abdelmoumen, responsible for cleanliness in the city, voiced his support for the initiative.

According to VRT News, Brussel(Pou)belle—which cleverly riffs on the French word for “garbage bin”—aims to raise awareness about urban neglect and promote a cleaner Brussels. The group uses Instagram to spotlight areas plagued by waste and poor maintenance, and it advocates for sustainable solutions by engaging with political leaders.

In addition to social media activism, Brussel(Pou)belle regularly organizes public clean-up events, rallying volunteers to take direct action against litter and urban grime.

How Did Brussel(Pou)belle and the City of Brussels Tackle Cleanliness in Alhambra?

On May 18, 2025, Brussel(Pou)belle held its first collaborative clean-up event with the City of Brussels, choosing the Alhambra neighbourhood due to its known challenges, including vacant buildings, illegal rentals, and drug-related issues.

The group hoped to shed light on how these urban problems are deeply linked to cleanliness and overall neighbourhood deterioration. They emphasized that this clean-up effort was just a starting point, urging city officials to address underlying causes of neglect.

Equipped with gloves, grabbers, and trash bags, volunteers spent two hours tidying the area. They not only removed litter but also engaged with residents to spread awareness about the importance of maintaining clean public spaces. In total, 10 large bags of trash were collected through the communal effort between city street cleaners and local residents.

Meanwhile, city authorities monitored for illegal dumping. Four offenders were caught in the act, including one person who was seen placing garbage bags under a tree. Altogether, fines of €550 were issued for these violations.

Anas Ben Abdelmoumen praised the event, stating that such initiatives not only help beautify the area but also foster community dialogue. “These efforts allow us to connect with residents and understand the specific challenges faced in neighbourhoods like Alhambra,” he said.

Oh, look at them, saving the world one €550 fine at a time! Who knew cleaning up Alhambra could double as a community bonding experience? 😂🧹 #WasteNotWantNot

Just what we needed, another cleanup campaign to remind us that Brussels is basically a giant rubbish bin with a side of charming European flair. 🍟💩 Ten bags of trash? I’d say that’s a solid weekend’s work for our city’s “cleanliness czar” – perhaps next time they could aim for a bit more than just the ‘low-hanging fruit’! 😂

Looks like the real gold in Alhambra isn’t the architecture, but the sheer volume of rubbish! Only in Brussels can a clean-up turn into a €550 fine parade—who knew littering was such an expensive hobby? 😂💰

Oh, look at that, 10 bags of trash! Just what Brussels needed to remind us that “urban neglect” is the new chic. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe next time they can throw in a few fines for style, too! 💸
