Kyiv (Eurotoday) – Ukraine’s military reported that Russia executed its most extensive drone assault on Ukrainian territory overnight, intensifying its military operations even as both countries engaged in direct peace negotiations on Friday.
What transpired during the latest Russia-Ukraine discussions?
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 273 Shahed drones in a single night, primarily targeting central Kyiv. Mykola Kalashnik, governor of the Kyiv region, confirmed the death of a 28-year-old woman and injuries to three others, including a four-year-old child.
How deadly was the overnight assault on Ukraine?
According to Ukraine’s emergency services, the large-scale attack sparked multiple fires, prompting the deployment of 55 rescue workers. Air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 88 drones overnight. Additionally, reports from Ukraine’s air force noted 128 simulator drones were launched but failed to reach their targets, causing no damage.
Vadym Filashkin, head of Donetsk’s regional military administration, reported that one person was killed and eight were injured due to Russian shelling in the region. Drone strikes were also reported in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, according to local military sources.
Ukraine’s parliamentary speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk commented:
“The air raid alarm lasted nearly nine hours.”
He added that this exemplifies the reality behind President Vladimir Putin’s “sincere desire for peace.” The assault damaged a high-rise apartment block, ignited garage fires, and destroyed multiple residential buildings.
“This is terror in its purest form,”
Stefanchuk wrote on social media.
What transpired during the latest Russia-Ukraine discussions?
Despite hopes for progress, no interim ceasefire was established during the first direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in three years, held in Istanbul on Friday. However, a mutual agreement was reached to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war from each side during the 100-minute session.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to meet with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday in an effort to push the peace process forward.
The summit followed several days of preliminary discussions. President Putin had requested an in-person meeting but ultimately did not attend, opting instead to send a junior delegation. He also dismissed Ukraine’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire.

Oh, brilliant strategy from Russia—nothing says “let’s negotiate peace” quite like a late-night drone party over Kyiv. Can’t wait to see how that goes down in the history books! 😏✈️

Blimey, who knew drone warfare could be such a popular nighttime pastime? It’s like the Russians took “let’s negotiate” as a cue for a fireworks display! 🎆🙄

Well, isn’t that just a lovely display of diplomacy? Nothing says “let’s talk peace” quite like launching 273 drones at your neighbor—absolutely charming! 😏

Oh, splendid! Nothing says “let’s negotiate peace” quite like launching 273 drones while chatting in Istanbul. Must be a new tactic: bomb first, talk later! 😂

Oh, fantastic, just when we thought the negotiations were going swimmingly, Russia decides to throw a surprise drone party! 🎉 Nothing says “peace talks” quite like a good old-fashioned firework display over Kyiv. 🔥

Oh, lovely! Nothing says “let’s negotiate peace” quite like a night filled with 273 drones—must be what they call a “friendly reminder” in Moscow! 😏

Oh, just another “peace talk” followed by a record-breaking drone show—who knew negotiations could be so explosive? 🎉 Looks like the only thing flying higher than those drones is the irony of it all!

Typical Russian diplomacy: why discuss peace when you can throw a drone party instead? 🎉 Nothing says “let’s negotiate” like a high-flying wake-up call to Kyiv! 🤷♂️
