How does the European Union operate, and what are the best practices for accurately and effectively covering news from EU institutions?
This was the focus of a two-day workshop led by Yacine Le Forestier, the Deputy Head of the Europe Region and Head of Germany at Agence France-Presse (AFP), who guided a diverse group of journalists from across Europe at the European Newsroom (enr).
Through interactive sessions, practical exercises, and expert insights, participants enhanced their ability to cover EU-related news. They acquired valuable information on how EU institutions function, decision-making processes, and effective techniques for source verification.
The workshop provided essential knowledge on navigating EU communication channels and utilizing resources like the European Broadcasting Service (EBS), focusing on skill-building and boosting confidence — one story at a time.
The first day concentrated on the theoretical aspects of EU institutions and their coverage, while the second day offered a firsthand experience of the EU’s operations through visits to three key institutions.
Day 1: Exploring Institutions and Sources
The workshop began at the enr’s location within the Belga News Agency in central Brussels, where participants engaged in an interactive quiz and roleplay to familiarize themselves with the primary EU institutions. They received practical guidance on how to access information, both online and offline.
To apply their newfound knowledge, attendees participated in a breaking news simulation centered on a past European Council summit, which convenes EU heads of state and government, offering a hands-on reporting experience.
Recognizing that EU news is often perceived as insular, journalists were reminded of the importance of human-interest elements in their stories and were given tips on how to transform policy discussions into relatable narratives for a wider audience.

Day 2: Inside the Council, Commission, and Parliament of the EU
The second day of the workshop allowed participants to step inside the EU machinery. They met key representatives and press officers from three central institutions.
The day began with a visit to the Council of the European Union, where participants met with Niels Timmermans, the press officer for Telecommunications and Transport, followed by a guided tour of the Justus Lipsius and Europa buildings led by Federico Bagioli from the press center.
Next, the group moved to the European Commission’s Berlaymont building to engage with Deputy Chief Spokesperson Stefan De Keersmaecker, discussing the commission’s communication strategies and media policies.
To conclude the day, participants visited the European Parliament, where they interacted with Neil Corlett, the Head of the Press Unit, and his team of press officers, including Emilie Tournier from the Spokesperson’s Unit. They also received a guided tour of the Parliament building, including the hemicycle and audiovisual services.

Isn’t it just delightful that for only two days in Brussels, you can learn how to navigate the labyrinthine world of EU bureaucracy? I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend their weekend figuring out how to turn dry policy into a gripping news story? 🥳

Just what the world needed—another two-day workshop on EU institutions! Because who wouldn’t want to spend a weekend in Brussels learning how to cover a bureaucracy that moves slower than a snail on holiday? 🐌💼

Just what we need, a workshop to teach us how to decode the labyrinth that is the EU! 🍷 Because nothing says “hands-on experience” like a two-day tour of bureaucratic buildings followed by a game of “who can find the exit first?” 😂

Honestly, if I wanted to learn how to report on an institution as thrilling as watching paint dry, I’d just sit through a three-hour meeting—no workshop required! 😂 But hey, at least the coffee in Brussels is top-notch! ☕
