Warsaw – A political consensus to establish a special tribunal aimed at holding Russia accountable for its invasion of Ukraine will be revealed on Friday in Lviv, located in western Ukraine. This announcement coincides with Russia’s commemoration of its victory over Nazi Germany in 1945.
Following an informal meeting of European foreign ministers in Warsaw, Kaja Kallas reassured the media, stating, “There will be no impunity.”
This new tribunal, focused on crimes of aggression, will operate alongside the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has issued international arrest warrants for several Russian officials, including Vladimir Putin. However, the ICC lacks the jurisdiction to prosecute Russia for crimes of aggression, which is why the establishment of this special tribunal was proposed soon after the invasion.
Additionally, Ms. Kallas announced the allocation of one billion euros to bolster the Ukrainian defense industry, funding that will be generated from the interest on Russian assets currently frozen in Europe. (May 8, 2025)
