Bratislava – Slovakia acknowledges the pressing objective of reducing the European Union’s (EU) energy reliance on non-member states. However, the recent proposal from the European Commission (EC), which calls for an immediate halt to imports of gas, oil, and nuclear fuel from Russia, is deemed unacceptable by Slovakia in its current form. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) expressed this sentiment on Wednesday, as reported by TASR.
Fico stated, “I possess extensive data pointing to the fact that we are embarking on a perilous path. While we support the strategic aim of decreasing energy dependence, Slovakia is prepared to collaborate with the EU on this matter. However, I cannot endorse what I view as economic self-destruction; it would be utterly reckless to propose the complete cessation of gas, nuclear, and oil imports simply because a new iron curtain is being drawn between the Western world and potentially Russia and other nations.”
The Prime Minister emphasized Slovakia’s willingness to actively participate in discussions regarding legislative proposals that will stem from the Commission’s roadmap. He insisted that the unique circumstances and experiences of individual EU member states should be considered. “From today onward, we will vigorously alert the EC to the risks involved with this document, which I view as a political gamble. It is an economically irresponsible proposal,” Fico asserted, warning that implementation could lead to significant harm to the EU, increased energy prices, and diminished competitiveness.
Currently, Prime Minister Fico noted that it remains uncertain how the legislation will be ratified—whether it will require unanimous approval or can proceed with a qualified majority.
“If a qualified majority is the approach, it could lead to larger nations imposing their will. I would find this highly regrettable and advocate for a unanimous agreement to ensure the document carries weight,” he added. (May 7)
