Brussels – The EU Council has decided to allocate 15 million euros in aid through the European Peace Facility (EPF) to enhance the defense capabilities and operational readiness of the Army of the Republic of North Macedonia (ARM), as reported by MIA from Brussels.
High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, stated, “Today we have agreed to extend an additional 15 million euros in EU support to the Army of North Macedonia.” She emphasized that the funds will be used for acquiring a range of equipment, including tools for intelligence gathering, surveillance, and combat training.
“Our assistance will enable North Macedonia to play a crucial role in promoting regional stability and security, which is vital not only for the Western Balkans but also for the EU as a whole,” Kallas added.
She noted that this support, aimed at conflict prevention and bolstering regional stability, underscores the EU’s commitment to backing North Macedonia on its journey toward EU membership.
Kallas expressed her anticipation for her upcoming visit next month, where she aims to further discuss shared objectives.
The European Council reported that with the current aid package, along with bilateral support allocated for 2023 and 2024, the total assistance provided to North Macedonia under the EPF has reached 38 million euros.
This decision highlights the EU’s ongoing collaboration with North Macedonia in security and defense matters, including the signing of a Security and Defense Partnership between the EU and North Macedonia last November, reflecting the nation’s complete alignment with the EU’s common foreign and security policy.
The funds granted today will enable the Macedonian Army to acquire equipment for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare. This includes utility and engineering vehicles, communication and information systems, and resources for combat training. Additionally, if needed, operational training for utilizing this equipment will also be provided.
The new aid measure is expected to bolster North Macedonia’s capacity to participate in EU operations and missions, as well as in all international coalitions. (April 25, 2025)
