Von der Leyen and Trump Schedule Meeting Date to Be Announced

Rome – Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and U.S. President Donald Trump held a brief exchange on Saturday in Rome, where both attended the funeral of Pope Francis.

According to a statement from European Commission spokesperson Paula Pihno, “President Von der Leyen and President Trump agreed to meet,” though she did not disclose when or where the meeting would occur.

The handshake and exchange took place during the funeral at St. Peter’s Square, marking the leaders’ first interaction since Trump’s re-election, amidst ongoing tensions from the trade war initiated by the U.S. leader.

Von der Leyen commented on social media, “Today, leaders from around the world gathered to pay their final tribute to His Holiness Pope Francis. I had good exchanges with several of them.” While she did not mention Trump specifically, she shared a photo that included him, among other leaders.

The EU and the U.S. are currently engaged in negotiations over tariffs, prompted by the European Union’s implementation of a 25% global tax on steel, aluminum, and automobiles, along with a reciprocal 20% tariff on other goods, which has been temporarily halved for 90 days.

In a bid to de-escalate trade tensions, Brussels has also postponed its decision to impose a 25% tariff on a range of U.S. products in retaliation for the tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Technical negotiations are ongoing to reach a resolution with Washington, as reported by Commission spokesperson Olof Gill, who noted that “political contact will resume when it is necessary, beneficial, and appropriate.”

On the same day in Rome, President Trump also held a private meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which was later joined by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. (April 26)

So, let me get this straight: two political giants meet at a funeral—how very fitting for their negotiations, right? 😂 Next thing you know, they’ll be scheduling the next round of trade talks over a nice cup of espresso! ☕️

Looks like the dynamic duo of Von der Leyen and Trump are finally ready for their big tête-à-tête—just what we need, a meeting to discuss tariffs while paying tribute in the land of ‘la dolce vita.’ 🍝 Let’s hope they leave the trade war at the door and pick up some gelato instead! 😅

Looks like the EU and the US are finally arranging a rendezvous—because nothing says diplomacy like a funeral handshake, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Can’t wait to see what they cook up over their next cup of tea; perhaps a side of tariffs with a sprinkle of tension? 🍵💼

  4. Oh, splendid! Nothing like a funeral to spark a delightful tête-à-tête between Ms. Von der Leyen and Mr. Trump—just what the Vatican ordered! 😏 Can’t wait for the sequel: “When Tariffs Meet in Rome.” 🍷

So, two leaders who can’t agree on where to have lunch are finally meeting—should we book a table at the Vatican, or is it more of a fast-food rendezvous? 🍔 Just what the world needs, a tête-à-tête with a side of tariffs! 😏

What Occurs in the Brain During Vacation

The onset of a vacation often follows a common pattern. Initially, we vow not to check our work chat. The next day, we might “just check” for urgent matters.
