In 2025, eleven student teams from across Greece are set to launch their own mini-satellites, each roughly the size of a soda can, as part of the national CanSat competition.
The CanSat competition is an initiative by the European Space Agency (ESA), in which student teams from various European countries design satellites that are launched to approximately one kilometer in altitude using a rocket. Once released, the satellites descend with parachutes while conducting various scientific and technological missions. In Greece, the competition is coordinated by ESERO Greece (European Space Education Resource Office) at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), in partnership with the ASAT (Aristotle Space & Aeronautics Team).
Participants in this exciting program gain valuable knowledge in STEM fields, simulating real space missions and developing essential 21st-century skills. They also have the chance to work alongside scientists and engineers in the aerospace sector.
Members of the public are invited to witness the launches live at the Megara Shooting Range. Following the competition, awards and medals will be presented to the teams, with one standout team earning a unique opportunity to visit the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC)—the European Space Agency’s primary technology development and testing hub for spacecraft. This visit will include a three-day event celebrating the winning CanSat teams from across Europe.
