Schaerbeek (Eurotoday) – Prosecutors suspect that the shooting in Schaerbeek on Monday evening is likely tied to drug-related activities. The victim wounded in the incident has survived and is not in life-threatening condition.
A shooting occurred in Schaerbeek on Monday evening, and police believe it is connected to the illegal drug trade. According to the Brussels public prosecutor, a man was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment. The incident happened around 5 p.m. on Allardstraat, where multiple witnesses reported the presence of armed individuals.
“We can confirm that the victim’s life is no longer in danger,” stated public prosecutor’s office spokesperson Martin François. “Initial findings of the investigation suggest a link to drug-related activities. The investigation is ongoing, and no further information will be provided at this time.”
Rising Crime and Drug Activity in Schaerbeek
In recent years, Schaerbeek, a municipality in Brussels, has seen a noticeable rise in violent crime, largely driven by drug-related offenses. According to the Belgian Federal Police, 1,207 violent crimes were recorded in Brussels-North in 2022—a 15% increase compared to 2020. Firearms were used in about 8% of those cases, while knives were involved in approximately 20% of the incidents.
In 2023 alone, authorities seized more than 50 kilograms of illegal narcotics in Schaerbeek, according to data from the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office. The area has also witnessed an uptick in drug-related shootings, with at least six documented incidents over the past two years. Allardstraat, the location of the most recent shooting, has been flagged in police reports as a hotspot for illicit drug activity.
Nearby Brussels-North station has also been the scene of violence, including a fatal shooting in April 2024, as well as several other serious incidents. Law enforcement agencies believe that the ongoing turf battles between rival drug trafficking groups are behind much of the violence plaguing the region.
While local authorities are attempting to strengthen patrols and law enforcement presence, they continue to face significant challenges. These include the mobility of drug gangs and the lenient prosecution of minor drug offenses, which often escalate into more serious and violent confrontations.
