LUXEMBOURG (Fena) – The foreign ministers of the European Union convened in Luxembourg to address the ongoing situation in the Western Balkans. They reaffirmed the necessity of normalizing relations between Belgrade and Pristina, as well as the urgency of resolving the political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Foreign Affairs Council meeting was overseen by High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. During the session, the ministers discussed the EU’s collaboration with Western Balkan nations, focusing on enhancing the security and defense aspects of their partnership and promoting regional stability amid a politically challenging landscape.
As outlined in the EU Council’s statement, particular focus was placed on the situations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, underscoring the pressing need to normalize relations between Belgrade and Pristina. Commissioner Kallas emphasized that the security and stability of the region are vital for the entire European Union.
“Geographically, the Western Balkans are part of Europe, and they should also be part of the European Union. Thus, the enlargement process is crucial, and we must advance it,” Kallas stated.
She further noted that Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently facing a constitutional crisis.
“Any efforts to dismantle Bosnia and Herzegovina are completely unacceptable. Political leaders need to work towards uniting the country rather than deepening divisions. During my recent visit, it was clear that there is a consensus on the importance of enlargement. Leaders must take decisive actions in this direction, as the prospect for reducing international intervention will improve if they demonstrate their ability to make independent decisions,” she concluded.
