EU Unveils First European List of Safe Countries of Origin

BRUSSELS – On Wednesday, the European Commission unveiled its inaugural list of safe countries of origin, which aims to make it more challenging for citizens from these nations to secure asylum in the EU while facilitating their return.

This initial list includes Kosovo, Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Morocco, and Tunisia.

The Commission’s objective is to streamline the asylum process, as applications from these countries historically have low approval rates. Consequently, individuals from these nations will face increased obstacles in obtaining asylum in the EU, and their repatriation will be expedited.

Although some EU member states have established their own national lists of safe countries of origin, a unified European list has been absent until now. The Commission notes that the lack of harmonization has led asylum seekers to gravitate toward member states with more lenient regulations for seeking international protection. This proposal aims to address that issue.

Moreover, the Commission posits that countries aspiring to join the EU typically meet the criteria for being classified as safe countries of origin, as they work towards building stable institutions that uphold democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and the protection of minority groups.

A candidate country would only be removed from the safe countries list under specific exceptional circumstances, such as widespread violence due to conflict, sanctions imposed by the EU Council, or if the rate of asylum approvals for that country surpasses 20 percent. (April 16, 2025)

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—more paperwork and a list longer than a British train delay, all to ensure that the only thing getting expedited is the return ticket home. Guess that makes us the ultimate holiday destination for red tape lovers! 😂✈️

Oh, how charming, a ‘safe countries’ list – just what we needed to ensure that bureaucrats have another reason to sip their lattes while the rest of us wait in line for our dreams of freedom. 😂 Can’t wait to see the postcard from the ‘land of opportunities’ – oh wait, it’s just more paperwork! 🗂️✈️

  3. Oh lovely, nothing says “we care about human rights” like a neat little list to make sure asylum seekers know exactly where they can *not* find safety. 😏 It’s like giving a kid a map to a candy store but telling them they can only look through the window! 🍬

  4. Oh fantastic, nothing says “we care” quite like a list of safe countries that just happens to make life a wee bit more miserable for those seeking refuge. 🤷‍♂️ Bravo, EU, you’ve really nailed the art of bureaucracy—who needs compassion when you’ve got a checklist? 👏

Exciting news from the EU! Who knew making asylum harder was the latest trend? I mean, why not add more countries to the list while we’re at it? 🇪🇺✈️ #SafeButNotReally

Oh, fantastic! Just what we needed—a list to make the asylum process as breezy as a rainy day in London. 🌧️ Nothing says “welcome” quite like a bureaucratic checklist, eh? 🙄

Isn’t it just lovely how the EU finally got around to making a list? 🎉 Because nothing says “we care about asylum seekers” quite like bureaucratic red tape and a neatly printed roster of “safe” countries – must be a real page-turner for those in need! 😂

  8. Oh fantastic, a European list of ‘safe’ countries—because who doesn’t love a good bureaucratic game of musical chairs? 🎶 So, if you’re from one of these charming locales, better pack your bags for a one-way trip home, eh? 😂

So, the EU’s cooking up a “safe list” like a Michelin-star chef but for countries, eh? 🍽️ Can’t wait to see how many people actually make the cut—maybe it’s time for a reality show, “Survivor: Asylum Edition”! 😂
