Ganshoren (Eurotoday) – A Brussels firefighter ladder truck collided with a private vehicle in Ganshoren, resulting in the emergency vehicle coming to a halt in a nearby hedge, according to a report from the Brussels Fire Department on Saturday afternoon. All involved parties sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital for medical evaluation.
The ladder truck, operated by the Brussels fire service, was en route to a fire emergency when it struck a private car at the intersection of Avenue de l’Exposition Universelle and Drève de Rivieren around 11:30 AM. The impact forced the fire engine off the road and into a hedge. According to the fire brigade’s spokesperson, the accident resulted in minor injuries for both firefighters and the car’s occupants—two individuals from each vehicle were taken to the hospital.
“The emergency vehicle was heading to a fire in Ganshoren,” said fire department spokesman Walter Derieuw.
“The service vehicle had its siren and lights activated at the time of the accident,” he added, noting that “a routine police investigation is underway to determine the precise circumstances of the crash.”
Background on Fire Engine Accidents in Brussels
Though relatively uncommon, fire engine accidents are a known hazard due to the high-speed responses involved in emergency situations. According to the Brussels Fire Brigade, between 15 and 20 such collisions occur each year across the capital. Information from the Belgian Road Safety Institute notes that nearly 40% of emergency vehicle collisions happen at intersections, frequently because drivers fail to yield to priority vehicles.
Brussels has strict protocols requiring emergency responders to use both sirens and flashing lights when responding to urgent calls. However, driver awareness remains a concern. Research by the Vias Institute in 2021 revealed that only 70% of drivers react appropriately to sirens, leaving 30% unable to effectively respond—either due to distraction, noise insulation, or other delays in perception. Public campaigns have been launched to raise awareness, but incidents continue to occur.
Transport-related incidents remain one of the leading causes of injury for Belgian firefighters. According to the European Fire Safety Alliance, 12% of their work-related injuries stem from traffic accidents. While most injuries are minor, any such collision disrupts emergency operations and raises concerns about the safety and efficiency of critical response services. Authorities are currently investigating the Ganshoren crash to determine if traffic violations or other factors contributed to the incident.

What a classic case of “let’s see who can park in the hedge first,” eh? Just when you think the fire brigade couldn’t possibly add any more excitement to their day, they find a way to take a detour through the shrubbery! 😂🌲

Looks like the fire truck took a detour into hedge management instead of firefighting—who knew Ganshoren’s emergency services were so versatile? 🚒🌳 Just when you thought it was all about saving lives, turns out they’re also into gardening! 😂

Just what we need, a fire truck taking the scenic route into a hedge—talk about an unexpected detour! 🚒🌳 At least it wasn’t a “hot” pursuit, eh?

Just when you thought being a firefighter was all about saving lives, they’ve now added ‘hedge-diving’ to the job description. Must be a new training technique for overcoming obstacles—might as well toss in a few donuts while we’re at it! 😂🥴
