Greenland Set to Form Broad Coalition Government in Response to U.S. Pressure
Greenland is poised to establish a wide-ranging coalition government that includes all but one of the political parties represented in its parliament, signaling an unprecedented display of political unity amid growing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to local news outlets KNR and Sermitsiaq, four out of the five parties with seats in Greenland’s legislature have reached an agreement to form a new government. The coalition is expected to be officially announced on Friday—the same day that U.S. Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to visit a U.S. military base on the Arctic island.
This move follows a closely watched parliamentary election held two weeks ago, in which the center-right Democrats emerged victorious, securing roughly 30 percent of the vote and defeating the incumbent left-wing coalition. Despite their win, party leaders emphasized their goal of building an inclusive government in light of increasing geopolitical pressure from Washington, including renewed interest from President Trump in acquiring Greenland.
The new coalition reflects a strategic alignment among Greenlandic parties to maintain internal stability and assert greater control over the island’s future as external interest in the remote, resource-rich territory continues to grow.
