Hasselt (Eurotoday) – Kortessem has officially merged with Hasselt, leading to changes in street names and postal codes. Many residents mistakenly believed they needed to update their ID cards by March 31. Alderman Kevin Schouterden has clarified that there is no strict deadline for this update.
Following the merger, residents of Kortessem now fall under Hasselt’s jurisdiction. This transition brought changes to street names and postal codes, prompting city officials to recommend an update of ID cards. However, the recommended three-month timeframe was only a suggestion, not a legal requirement.
While the city encouraged residents to make the changes promptly, there was no official cutoff date. Misunderstandings led many people to flood the city hall, believing March 31 was the final date to update their documents. City authorities are now working to clarify that there is no such deadline.
“Many people thought we had imposed a strict end date, but that is not the case.”
– Kevin Schouterden, Alderman for Civil Affairs (Vooruit)
When should Kortessem residents update their ID cards?
There was confusion around the March 31, 2025 date, which also coincided with a strike, causing concern that city hall might be closed. As a result, large crowds rushed to update their ID cards. The unexpected turnout made city officials realize the need to better communicate that there was no hard deadline.
Alderman Schouterden explained that residents have up to two years to update their street names and five years to change postal codes on their identification. The city emphasizes there’s no need to hurry, allowing residents ample time to complete the updates.
Officials acknowledged that the wording on Hasselt’s website may have unintentionally implied a strict deadline. Efforts are now underway to revise the site and ensure residents understand that they can take their time in updating their information. The goal is to make communication clearer and more accessible.

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a merger to send everyone into a frenzy over ID updates—who knew changing a street name could spark such a delightful stampede? 😂 Just a friendly reminder, folks: take your time, it’s not like the new postal codes are going anywhere! 🕰️
