For over a year and a half, Armenia, a former Soviet republic, has been taking steps to assert its independence from Russia, its long-standing ally that maintains a military presence within its borders. In response, Moscow has warned Armenia that pursuing closer ties with the European bloc could have serious consequences.
In January, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed support for the EU candidacy but emphasized that any decision regarding membership should be determined through a referendum, rather than simply by legal or governmental means.
European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, mentioned in January that Brussels would welcome a formal request for membership if Armenia chooses to pursue it. (March 26, 2025)
